LTL CARRIER KOOL PAK° SECURES VOLVO TRUCK FLEET: July 2015 - Refrigerated LTL carrier Kool Pak°® is rolling out a fleet of new 2015 Volvo trucks to their Owner-Operators. Kool Pak° purchased the trucks and leases them to independent Owner-Operator drivers who own their own businesses and supplement the Kool Pak° team of drivers. Safely transporting frozen and chilled food products requires reliable equipment to protect shipments throughout the distribution process, especially during summer months. The purchase of the Volvo trucks eliminated the high operation and maintenance costs of the 2011 fleet of trucks, while also preventing breakdowns, unnecessary down time, financial hardship and potential customer service issues.
Kool Pak° is proud to partner with their Owner-Operators to ensure they are profitable and provide exceptional transportation services. Owner-Operators expand the company’s fleet capacity to consistently meet the temperature-controlled transportation needs of customers across the U.S. With the truck lease program, Owner-Operators have improved mileage, as well as full service maintenance agreements and no additional bills to pay. Notes CEO Steve Ness, “We are committed to taking care of our dedicated Owner-Operators as well as our employees. We treat everyone as family.” That sentiment is shared by long-time Owner-Operator, Ron Langley, who adds, “there is so much less stress with these new Volvo trucks; no repair bills, everything is covered from the drive train to lightbulbs. There is room to move around, plus we are getting great fuel mileage. I couldn’t be happier. Kool Pak° opens every door of opportunity for drivers to succeed.”

KOOL PAK° DELIVERS SUPPORT TO THE DALLES OR FIREFIGHTERS: September 2013 - During the extensive fires that plagued the Mount Hood National Forest in recent weeks, there’s been a tremendous need to help the many firefighters and support workers during their relief and containment efforts. They needed a way to keep food supplies safe during the extended period the firefighters were deployed.
We received a call in late August requesting our services to keep food cold for the nearly 800 firefighters working on-site. Our dedicated team quickly responded. We delivered one of our newest temperature-controlled trailers to keep their food supplies cold. Our driver picked up two pallets of ice and delivered the reefer trailer to the firefighter’s camp near The Dalles for a week. Along with the trailer, we arranged for portable steps to make food access easier for the firefighters and their support team. The 800 firefighters were working on three lightning-sparked fires 10 miles southwest of The Dalles, OR. The fires covered nearly 11,500 acres before being contained. Some of the fires affected Mt. Hood National Forest facilities and trails.
Kool Pak° was glad to be of service to our firefighters.
ANNOUNCING STELLAR RESULTS OF OUR KEEP IT KOOL° PROGRAM: August 2013 - Successfully managing temperature-sensitive loads is what we do best at Kool Pak°. Since starting our claims prevention and quality assurance program at the beginning of fiscal year 2009, the Keep it KOOL° program continues to deliver results for our customers. Now into our fifth year, we’re pleased to announce that our fiscal year 2013 results are seven times better than average pre-program figures, at an astounding .05%. That’s nearly 20 times better than the industry average. Created as a way to involve every employee in reducing and preventing claims, the excellent results of the program continue on their long-term trend as the lowest in the industry. For FY 2013, we’ve paid almost one third the amount of freight claims since Keep it KOOL° began.
Keep it KOOL° Program Motivates Staff
Even before we started our proprietary quality assurance program, our claims paid were far below the industry average of 1% of revenue, at .36%. Since the inception of the highly successful Keep it KOOL° program, KOOL PAK° employees have consistently brought the number of claims down to an average of .13% for the past five years running. Kool Pak° is committed the continued success of the program. That means our customers are assured of safe handling of every shipment from pickup to delivery. And that leads to fewer freight claims. Our employees’ hard work and perseverance continue to make a substantial difference to Kool Pak° and to our customers across the U.S. and Canada.

POLAR EXPRESS TRANSPORTATION ACHIEVES U.S. EPA SMARTWAY TRANSPORT PARTNERSHIP: June 24, 2013 - We're transporting refrigerated, frozen and dry goods more sustainably. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently certified Polar Express Transportation LTD as a SmartWay Transport Partner. Being SmartWay certified means Polar Express Transportation is helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint by moving frozen, refrigerated and dry goods more sustainably, lowering emissions and improving freight efficiency. Based in British Columbia, Polar Express provides temperature-controlled LTL transportation and logistics services throughout the U.S. and Canada.
To earn SmartWay certification requires an extensive commitment by transportation carriers to meet environmental compliance requirements and benchmarks that prove reduced energy consumption, improved efficiencies, and less air pollution. Polar Express incorporated several measures that include installation of APUs in all tractors for efficient heating and cooling to minimize idling time; popular Driver Incentive programs that reduce pollution by decreasing speed, lowering RPMs and idling time; installing aerodynamic bumpers, mirrors and low-rolling resistance tires. They also invested in new technologies that ensure customers' temperature-controlled shipments are safe throughout the cold chain.
Kool Pak° LLC, parent company of Polar Express Transportation, engaged with SmartWay in 2009 and earned their certification in 2011. “When we purchased Polar Express in January 2012, it was natural for Polar Express to achieve the same level of environmental commitment”, commented Kool Pak° CEO Steve Ness. “Our customers can rest assured that we’re employing the same high standards as we transport their goods throughout the U.S. and Canada. Plus, all of our tractors and trailers are California Carb Compliant.”
Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Air Pollution
SmartWay Transport Partnership is a public-private initiative unifying government, transportation providers and businesses to reduce fuel consumption and improve air quality, moving more goods, more miles with lower emissions and less energy. Since 2004, SmartWay program has helped businesses achieve fuel savings of USD 8.1 billion, saving 65 million barrels of oil, reducing 28 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, 478,000 tons of nitrogen oxide and 22,000 tons of particulates from the air.
Kool Pak°, LLC purchased Polar Express Transportation in January 2012.
SAFETY AND SECURITY ARE TOPS AT THE NEW KOOL PAK° CLACKAMAS YARD: April 30, 2013 - Safety is our priority at Kool Pak° and the new yard in Clackamas reflects that attention to detail. The yard officially opened on April 19th, and newly remodeled offices opened after improvements were completed on the 26th. The newly opened facility features state of the art safety and security measures for equipment and product stored on site. Features include a fenced yard with security cameras and security personnel to control access. This ensures that there’s no tampering or break-ins and products remain secure until they’re delivered to our customers.
Employee safety is also a priority and the new location provides a clean and safe work environment. There’s more space for our drivers to park trailers and the new building offers better facilities – including a place to chill (and not in one of our freezers). Being just half a mile from the Clackamas warehouse saves time and fuel for drivers needing to store or pick up trailers. The really great benefit is that the remodeled facility is geared up for drivers to perform preventative maintenance and do minor vehicle maintenance, another time saver. Kool Pak° made this investment to improve services for our drivers and the bigger facility offers a relaxing respite from the road.

The sale also includes new-model tractors and dual-temp, refrigerated trailers. Impressed by Polar Express Transportation's management team, cross-border expertise and commitment to customer service, safety and the welfare of its employees, the acquisition was a logical addition to the Kool Pak° family. Polar Express Transportation will continue to operate under its current name and management. Kool Pak° US headquarters will provide state-of-the-art transportation management systems and other resources in support of its Canadian operations.
KOOL PAK HELPS MEET MANDATORY C-TPAT STANDARDS: June 2012 - Kool Pak° works closely with our customers to meet the security criteria outlined by the U.S. Customs C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) Program. We have adopted state of the art security programs throughout our organization to meet the highest demands of our customers as they work to achieve supply chain security.
We recently helped ConAgra maintain their mandatory C-TPAT standards. According to ConAgra's Corporate Security Manager and C-TPAT Program Manager Pete Peters:
"Your excellent response to our C-TPAT Security Audit allowed us to completely close this audit. We appreciate your helping us meet this important program obligation."
ConAgra Foods considers this facility to have implemented all mandatory C-TPAT standards. To get all of the items closed the first time with such an extraordinary commitment to not just merely implementing the minimum required by the standards, but to actually incorporate some "above and beyond" best practices was noteworthy of acknowledgement."
KOOL PAK TAKES TOP 2011 OTA SAFETY HONORS AND BECOMES AN ODOT TRUSTED CARRIER: April 2012 - Once again backing up our promise of leadership in worry-free, temperature-controlled LTL shipping, we're proud to announce we've become the Oregon Trucking Association's (OTA) Grand Safety Champion and have taken first place in their Fleet Safety Awards, Common Carrier Less-Than-Truckload (LTL)/Under 3 Million Miles.
This is the tenth time since 2002 Kool Pak°'s excellent safety record has been recognized by the OTA. In 2011, we had zero Department of Transportation recordable accidents in Oregon, a perfect record.
At the same time, the Oregon Department of Transportation has named us a Trusted Carrier, placing us among the top 15% "best" carriers in Oregon participating in the state's Green Light weigh station clearance program. For customers, this means less highway scale stops and less risk of load delay during the transport segment of the cold chain, thereby ensuring greater load safety and faster delivery.
The two OTA awards and our new ODOT status are further proof that we're literally going the extra mile to ensure the safety and speedy delivery of our customers' product, as well as the safety of the public and our drivers while in transit. For more information on how we're taking the worry out of temperature-controlled LTL shipping, we encourage you to contact Pam Dinsdale.
KOOL PAK EARNS SMARTWAY TRANSPORT PARTNERSHIP'S HIGHEST MARKS FOR CLEANER FREIGHT TRANSPORT: March 2011 - Kool Pak° LLC, an asset-based refrigerated carrier based in Lake Oswego OR, just earned SmartWay Transport Partner certification, achieving the highest score granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). To achieve this EPA certification, Kool Pak° fulfilled two years' of work toward improving such critical factors as fuel efficiency, reducing idling time, and incorporating energy efficiency measures including aerodynamic bumper and mirrors and low-rolling resistance tires. Kool Pak° has invested in new generation technologies and equipment to ensure integrity of customers' refrigerated shipments while operating in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Their efforts led to a 31.9% decrease in CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) and 73% decrease in NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide) emissions - both critical factors in measuring air pollution levels.
The US Government's EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership is a program that unifies government, business and consumers to reduce fuel consumption and improve air quality. Kool Pak has engaged with EPA since early 2009 to earn this certification.
